Police and SWAT Officers Arrest Protesters at Women’s Rights Rally

You want to see how absurd things are? How out of whack, how distorted? Here you go: Police and S.W.A.T. officers arrested a group of protesters who were sitting on the steps of the Capitol after protesting for women’s rights in Richmond, Virginia on March 3rd. 31 protesters were arrested in total.

Yes, they were just sitting there, not even blocking or impeding access on the very wide stairs.

Unlucky 137 uploaded this to YouTube:

Protesters wore armbands reading “Gov. McDonnell get out of my vagina!” Virginia is one of the states where Republicans introduced the physically offensive and often painful transvaginal ultrasound as a mandated medical procedure for women considering an abortion.

Longer version with the SWAT officers (REALLY, Virginia?):

“After the Women’s rights protesters took the capitol steps, 30 stayed behind on the steps, refusing to leave. Police then moved in with riot police and SWAT officers.”

This is absurd; they were just sitting there and if these authoritarian freedom thieves would stop and think about it, they would realize that if they just let people do their thing, it would have ended and no video would have been made to drive attention to the very protest some people are trying so hard to kill.

But no. Ever since Occupy took the country by storm, the powers that be have chosen too often to use brute force to shut the people down. We have the right to protest our government and to peaceably assemble in public areas.

Jeremy McBride wrote in Freedom of Association, “Freedom of assembly is the individual right to come together and collectively express, promote, pursue and defend common interests.” This is a political freedom and a civil liberty we are supposed to be entitled to exercise in public space.

This is just another in a long line of abuse of power by the police — or perhaps, the person who gave the orders to the police to make arrests.

Just how many male SWAT officers does it take to subdue a small group womens rights protesters who are sitting calmly on the steps? Surreal.

SWAT Officers take down the Ovaries = Freedom and Liberty.

Looking great, Virginia.

  1. Reynardine says:

Susan Faludi noted that every period of progress is followed by backlash, particularly in the area of women’s rights, but it appears to me that this one is marked by a peculiarly undisguised, in-your-face, brutality. There is not even the pretense that this supposed to be good for “real women”, as there was post WWII. Yet women still have the vote, and they are likely more than half of all registered voters. Conjecture…
